New maximum levels for dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in certain foodstuffs

Regulatory Updates

On October 24th 2022, the Regulation (EU) 2022/2002 was published, regarding Regulation (EU) 2022/2002, and concerning maximum levels for dioxins and the sum of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs.

Considering the EFSA report of 2018 and the available occurrence data and the importance to ensure a high level of human health protection, in particular for vulnerable groups of the population, it is appropriate to set up or already lower the maximum levels for dioxins and the sum of dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in some products.

– Maximum levels are established in some meat products that until now did not have the regulated maximum levels applied to them: meat products from caprine animals, horses, rabbits, wild boar, wild game birds and venison (category 5.1) and liver from caprine animals, horses and wild game birds (category 5.2).

– The abdomen of crabs and crab-like crustaceans is included as part of the animal where the maximum content must be applied (until now only applicable to appendages) (category 5.3).

– Maximum levels of these contaminants in raw milk and dairy products are reduced (category 5.8).

– Goose eggs are excluded from compliance with the maximum levels established for chicken eggs and egg products (category 5.9).

These limits shall apply from 1 January 2023, although foodstuffs that were lawfully placed on the market before 1 January 2023, may remain on the market until their date of minimum durability or use-by-date.

Our regulatory team can support you from legislative updates to identification and monitoring of food alerts, and high-level analytical services.

The team dedicated to the determination of such molecules offers a complete and reliable analytical service in full compliance with what is defined by the new EU legislation in terms of maximum levels and food, feed and environmental matrices, with results expressed as toxicity factors, TEQ units, calculated with the appropriate analytical-toxicological conversion factors.
