Allergens and the risk of food allergies for consumers set clear requirements for food labeling.
Allergens refer to typically harmless substances that trigger an immediate and abnormal hypersensitivity reaction of the immune system, commonly known as an “allergic reaction,” in sensitive individuals.
Food allergies and intolerance present a considerable challenge, impacting not only consumers but also food manufacturers and regulatory bodies. Although affecting a small segment of the population, the health repercussions can be severe.
The safest approach to mitigate health risks related to food consumption is to avoid products containing potentially harmful ingredients. Proper food labeling is crucial for individuals allergic or intolerant to specific foods or ingredients to navigate their dietary choices safely.
Mérieux NutriSciences offer solutions for the analysis of raw materials and processed foods (routine testing, limit analysis), label check, hygiene training and training in allergens. We tailor these solutions to the requirements of your industry.
Most Common Allergens
The Food Information to Consumers Regulation (EU Regulation No. 1169/2011) governs the proper labeling of common food allergens. Currently, 14 substances or products known to trigger allergies or intolerances are listed, including cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, soybeans, milk (including lactose), nuts, celery, mustard, sesame seeds, sulphites, lupin, and molluscs.
The regulation specifies how these substances are to be labeled by ‘highlighting.’ While unintentional contamination is not covered, it’s essential for product liability.
Allergen labeling is standardized across EU countries, but not internationally. For example, the US recognizes nine allergens, with differences in tree nuts. Non-compliance can lead to product recalls.
