Corporate Carbon Footprint

Any company aiming to improve its environmental impact on climate change must first understand its current impact. The initial step is typically calculating the corporate carbon footprint. This calculation establishes a baseline and enables your company to define a strategy, set targets, take action, and assess progress. Carbon accounting presents an incredible opportunity to support a company’s ambitious sustainability roadmap.

The Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the world’s most widely used GHG accounting standard, defines a company’s emissions as follows:

  • Scope 1 (Direct): Emissions from company-owned or controlled sources (e.g., company vehicles).
  • Scope 2 (Indirect from Energy): Emissions from generating purchased energy like electricity.
  • Scope 3 (Other Indirect): Emissions from the company’s value chain that it does not own or control, usually making up the bulk of total emissions. It includes categories like purchased goods and services, waste management, and business travel.

Our consultants can calculate your carbon emissions for scope 1, 2, and 3 in accordance with the GHG Protocol. Depending on the data you can collect, it can be decided to initially focus on scope 1 and 2, and to address only specific items within scope 3.

How to Proceed?

First, contact us! There are multiple methods to calculate an environmental footprint. Depending on your goals, we can help determine if the Corporate Carbon Footprint is the best choice.

If you decide to come on board, we will work with you to define the scope of the calculation and create a work plan.

  1. The initial phase involves data collection, supported by our software tool and consultants. You will gather data such as electricity bills, fuel consumption, and the number of company vehicles.
  2. Next, we convert this data into carbon emissions. The conversion depends on various factors, including your location and the types of fuels used. We adhere to industry guidelines for accurate calculations and cross-reference results with multiple databases.
  3. Finally, we provide you with a report containing key information about your company’s carbon footprint. This report identifies areas for improvement and guides your priority actions.

Over time, data collection will become more streamlined, and you will gain a better understanding of your environmental hotspots. Further environmental footprint studies, such as those at the product or activity level, can provide even more precise insights and drive meaningful actions.
