In the innovation era, the microplastics environmental challenge emerges as a crucial field of research and intervention. It is in this context that we are pleased to present a key technical webinar to explore and discuss the latest research and strategies related to the presence, monitoring and impact of microplastics in the environment.
Microplastics can move about 100 kilometres from their place of origin, carried by air currents, and then settle on land and in water. However, is it really achievable to eliminate them from the environment? Maybe not for now, but for years Andrea Vittadello – Sustainability Ambassador and Federico Benetti – Executive Director of ECSIN LAB have been committed and recognised nationally and internationally for their research in environmental sustainability and microplastics analysis. During the webinar, they will address this issue from different points of view, confronting each other on possible solutions to reduce the presence of microplastics in the environment and related analytical investigation to verify the effectiveness of each solution.

Microplastics: an ocean of challenges and solutions
Date: Thursday, 28 March
Time: 2:30– 3:30 pm (CET)
Language: English
What topics will we address?
- Microplastics: the state of the art. An in-depth webinar examining the sources of microplastics, including those intentionally added to products such as cosmetics and detergents, and those generated indirectly from the wear and tear of larger products such as tyres and textiles.
- Microplastics analysis: innovative testing and monitoring methodologies. Our experts will present state-of-the-art techniques for the identification and quantification of microplastics in various environmental matrices, from freshwater to marine environments and consumer products. Challenges related to standardisation of detection methods and international comparability of data will also be explored.
- Impact of microplastics: assessing the effect on the environment and human health. Despite growing concerns, many questions remain about the long-term consequences of exposure to these persistent particles. The webinar will provide a platform to discuss the latest research on the topic, including the implications for aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems as well as the human food chain.
- Regulatory initiatives. In terms of solutions, we will focus on regulatory and voluntary initiatives to reduce the production and release of microplastics. EU policies such as the restriction on the intentional addition of microplastics in products and proposals to limit the loss of plastic pellets during production and transport will be highlighted. In addition, sustainability strategies in product design will be discussed.
